Time is a blur, so this year I tracked the games and books I enjoy. I play [a slew of] shows while I draw, so I didn't try to track those, but there were some memorable standouts—as in, I actually watched them instead of using them for background noise. =) Please note that I am often behind the curve, so only the shows are truly "new releases."
Games I played (and liked!):
Okami (replay; artistic style holds well and what a game mechanic! caveat: it's my fave game)
Final Fantasy XV (fun combat, endearing characters, beautiful game; caveat: missed story beats)
The Last Guardian (puzzles!!! giant critter!!! caveat: game is all show and no tell)
Books I read (and liked!):
Midshipman's Hope (reread; no-win situations, terrible sacrifices, fantastically flawed characters)
Howl's Moving Castle (witty and charming)
DragonLance Legends: Time of the Twins (reread; hilarious and tragic in turns; caveat: 80s sexism)
The Stormlight Archive 1: The Way of Kings (fun, indulgent, entirely satisfying, great worldbuilding)
The Last Unicorn (playful prose, excellent balance of humor and heartache, thematic)
Shows I watched (and liked!):
The Dragon Prince (fun characters, cool setting; caveat: questionable animation choices)
Violet Evergarden (beautiful animation, tugged at heartstrings I didn't know I had)
Arslan Senki (political intrigue and mystery; caveat: slow pace)
The Good Place (ethical philosophy made funny)
The Haunting of Hill House (intense and thematic)
These were definitely highlights of 2018 for me. I sincerely hope I can uncover more good stuff in 2019. (Feel free to rec stuff to me!)
